Refurbishment & Conservation Works at Doneraile House, Co. Cork
Completed 2022
This project consisted of the proposed refurbishment works and associated external access to the basement, ground and first floors of the main house at Doneraile Court, which is an 18th Century stately mansion House, with 19th century additions, located on 400 acres of picturesque gardens and wildlife preserve on a slope that overlooks the river Awbeg. At the time of the project’s inception, much of the existing structure was under-utilised and suffering from consequential neglect. It was the intention of OPW to carry out restoration and repair works to the un-used ground floor of the house and part of its immediate environs to facilitate a venue for exhibitions, cultural and community events. It was subsequently decided by the clients to restore the house to its original form as a stately mansion and open it up to the public as a visitor attraction, similar to Castletown House in Co. Kildare.
The project was drawn out over a period of 5 years, as it had been put on hold from 2014 to 2017, and again from 2017 to 2018 due to funding issues. None the less the project was successfully completed in 2022.
Doran Cray was involved in the project from inception to completion, (RIAI Work Stages 1-8), which commenced in 2014 and completed in June 2022, through a contract for architectural services between Doran Cray and The Office of Public Works.
